Patient Procedures and Resources:

Creating an arteriovenous fistula (AVF):

  • An arteriovenous fistula is where a vein and an artery in your arm are joined directly (anastomosed) together under your skin. The blood in the artery flows into the vein with high pressure, making the vein larger and stronger. The vein is then usually large enough (matures) to work for your dialysis treatment after 6 to 8 weeks.

Peritoneal Dialysis Access Surgery:

  • “Keyhole” Laparoscopic insertion of a Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter (A plastic tube is inserted into the abdomen using keyhole instruments) & this tube allows fluid to drain in (and drain out) of the abdomen to facilitate dialysis at home.

Fistulogram, plasty (balloon dilatation), endovascular stents and other procedures to the arteries and veins in your arm:

  • This is a test in which X-ray contrast (dye) is injected into your fistula. The test gives information about the veins and artery of your fistula or graft, a bit like a map. The test helps to show any narrowing, or blockage in the blood vessels of your fistula - and then allows the interventional radiology team to perform any required treatment.

Hernia Surgery:

  • Peritoneal Dialysis will worsen pre-existing abdominal hernia symptoms (including inguinal, femoral, umbilical, spigelian and incisional hernias) - and generally require repair to allow successful dialysis.

  • Inguinal and femoral hernia repairs may affect how a future kidney transplant is performed, all patients that may require a future kidney transplant Must AVOID laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (TEP) - and instead have a considered, planned open hernia repair in a lower abdominal location (to facilitate future kidney transplant).
